How does the novel ‘Silas Marner’ show that in the ultimate scheme of things, justice prevails?
OR
The novel ‘Silas Marner’ has philosophical undertones. Discuss.

Dear student,

'The novel Silas Marner has philosophical undertones.' This statement can be elaborated upon by making use of the following points:
  • It is a story, which though based on a boy named Silas, talks of his struggle against the society. Silas grows to be a rich man by defeating fate.
  • His relationship with the society has been focussed upon, more than his relationship with the loved ones.
  • The depiction of a boy's journey from his house to a world full of sharks and back to his house. The point that should be noted here is the importance, which is given to the roots of the protagonist.
  • Criminal mind and ideology has been critiqued upon in the novel, how a robber thinks while committing a crime and how he himself justifies his actions, which are not justifiable according to the society.
  • To be out of a community is not acceptable and is considered to be unnatural.
  • Fate plays the most important role in a person's life, punishing or rewarding him appropriately for whatever he does.
  • Faith is a crucial aspect for the existence of man.
