* Imported farm animals, predators brought in to control native pests, and accidental stowaways can severely harm native flora and fauna and upset ecological equilibrium.

* Extensive expansion of arable land, depletion of vegetation, soil erosion, siltation of water bodies and loss of soil productivity attributed to negative impacts on the fauna of an area.

* Poaching and hunting are another major cause of animal species extinction which leads to the exotic species of animals getting endangered and becoming extinct altogether.

India has a wide variety of wildlife and rich in wildlife heritage. Elephant, one-horned rhinoceroses, camel, wild asses, Indian bison, buffalo, nilgai, deer, lions, Bengal tigers are some of them. For preserving natural habitat and wildlife, our government has set up, 89 national parks, 490 sanctuaries and 13 biosphere reserves. Besides these 27 Project Tiger, Project Elephant and Project Rhinoceros have been set up by the government in different states. The government has also programmes for the conservation of wetland, mangroves and coral reefs.
