NAME TWO HOUSES OF INDIAN PARLIAMENT. WHICH HOUSE IS MORE POWERFUL AND WHY?

The two houses of Indian parliament are Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

Lok sabha is more powerful than rajya sabha as:-

1. Any ordinary law needs to be passed by both the houses. But if there is a difference between the two houses, the final decision is taken in a joint session. Because of larger number of members, the view of Lok sabha is likely to  prevail in such a meeting.

 

2. Lok sabha exercises more power in money matters. Once the Lok sabha passed the budget of the government or any other money related law, the rajya sabha cannot reject it. The rajya sabha can only delay it by 14 days and suggest some changes in it. The Lok sabha may or may not accept these changes.

 

3.The Lok sabha controls the council of ministers. Only a person who enjoys the support of the majority of the members in the Lok sabha is appointed the Prime Minister.If the majority of Lok sabha members say they have 'no confidence' in the council of ministers, all ministers including the Prime Minister has to quit. The Rajya sabha does not have this power.

The 2 houses of the parliament are-

1.Lok sabha- This is the lower house of the parliament and is known as  'house of the people'. This house can be dissolved if a vote of no-confidence is passed against it.

2. Rajya sabha- This is the upper house of the parliament and is known is the 'council of states'. This house cannot be dissolved. This is the called the 'permanent house'.

The rajya sabha is more powerful as it cannot be dissolved.
