"Each One, Teach One"

Living by the "Each One, Teach One" Creed...

“Each one, teach one: is a widely accepted ideology that has circulated amongst the prison population or several decades. Upon my own incarceration I too have become rather familiar with this philosophy as it was taught to me by those older than I. However, not unlike many other prisoners of my generation, I failed to fully grasp the concept in it’s entirety. It was not until I witnessed this ideology neglected from practice that I then understood not only the importance but the real intention of education and purpose behind it.

This concept is founded upon the importance of education and unity as fundamental principles for survival. Education is the determining factor between success and failure. It is essential to point out that proper education such as moral training, knowledge of self and kind, and understanding the world in general, can lead to the development of individuals properly equipped to lead humanity. This importance of education is demonstrated in our daily lives via decisions we must make. A sound education I.e. knowledge of ourselves and surroundings, will lead to sound life decisions.

Unity is another prerequisite for human survival. Cooperation in human society gave rise to progress in physical, mental, and spiritual matters. It gave within each member of society a responsibility to the collective to maintain and adhere to moral ethical codes of conduct. Unity means that we live and die as one, and that we are only as strong as our weakest link. With a cohesive society leaning upon each other, we are able to reach new heights in all areas of human activity.

Throughout the course of time human progress has been preceded by the emergence of effective leaders. History books are filled with leaders who understood themselves and their constituents well enough to know how to utilize all assets effectively. Leaders unite people from all walks of life by using sound education to ensure survival and progress for society.

The “Each one, teach one” creed is, at its heart, quintessential leadership. It instills within us that with education comes a moral obligation to pass our knowledge on to our fellow human beings. By adopting this ideology in principle and adhering to it in practice we give reverence to our teachers by securing their legacy in the teaching process. This philosophy preserves the human race from intellectual and moral decay because as long as one possesses knowledge and practices this concept, hope remains for us all.

It is obvious from examining today’s society that this ideology has failed to be applied. Would-be educators have shirked their responsibility to educate others and see that this legacy continue,. We are engaged in a social “survival of the fittest” as those who know, compete against each other for economic and social status. A preoccupation with non-sensual matter such as entertainment, sports, money, etc. have superseded morality and ethics. Moral and ethical decay is beginning to raise havoc on ourselves, our families, and consequently, the world.

In the midst of a global economic crisis, we are confronted with a serious moral dilemma. A new generation of people will entrust their lives to a previous generation who, up to this point, have yet to prove itself capable of instructing and guiding. We must fulfill our moral obligation to learn and teach. The ideology of “Each one, teach one” must be re-instated in our lives as we construct a new generation of leaders who will ensure mental, physical, and spiritual progress for all humanity.

This phrase originated in the United States during slavery , when Africans and African Americanswere denied education , including learning to read . Many, if not most slaves were kept in a state of ignorance about anything beyond their immediate circumstances which were under control of owners, the law makers and the authorities. When a slave learned or was taught to read, it became their duty to teach someone else, spawning the phrase "Each one teach one."In the first half of the 20th century, the phrase was applied to the work of a Christian missionary, Dr. Frank Laubach, who utilized the concept to help address poverty and illiteracy in the Philippines. Many sources cite Dr. Laubach as creating the saying, but many others believe that he simply utilized it in order to advance the cause of ending illiteracy in the world. In the 1996 novel Push of Sapphire as well as the 2009 movie Precious the expression is used as the name of an alternative school that the principal character is attending after being expelled from public school.
