With the help of a suitable example, explain the process of hydrogenation mentioning the conditions of the reaction and any one change in physical property with the formation of the product.

Hi Amritha ,

Please find below the solution to the asked query:

Hydrogenation is the process of addition of hydrogen to an unsaturated organic compound (compounds containing double or triple bond) to convert it into a saturated compound (compound containing single bonds). This process requires catalyst, non-catalyzed hydrogenation occurs only at very high temperatures.

For example, let us consider the hydrogenation of ethene (CH =CH ).

The process of hydrogenation is also used in saturation of vegetable oils.

The physical properties changes on hydrogenation are :

  • Meting point

  • Density

  • Physical state
