the headwater of ganga called the baghirathi is fed by the gangothri glacier and joined by the alkananda at devaprayag in uttarkhand.the ganga is joined by many tributeries from the himlayas.the river yamuna rises frm the yamunotri glacier in the himalayas.the gagra the gandak and the kosi rises in nepal himalayas.the main tributeries which come frm the peninsular uplands are chambal,betwa and son.the ganga flows eastward till farakka in west bengalthe watter frm ganga and brahmaputra forms the mighty river meghna
