Q.1) Why did the Mariner think that the bird was a christian soul?

Q.2) On the basis of this poem write a brief character sketch of the Ancient Mariner. Write atleast one detail for each feature.

Q.3) In the poem, line 78-81, who is the speaker?

@ PoojaSanthosh, you are right.

@ shivanikalghat, the answer to your query is as follows:

1. The Mariner regards the Albatross as a Christian soul because when their ship was stuck in the unfavorable weather conditions to continue their journey, it was the only being that visited them. The visit of the Albatross was lucky for them as it brushed away the fog and the weather also became favorable for the sailors to sail in the sea. The sad thoughts of the sailors were also brushed away as the bird was also a means of frolic for them as it ate whatever was offered by the sailors.

2.We recommend you to write such answers using your own thoughts and ideas. However, you may consider the sample answer and enrich it by adding some of the points on your own:

The Ancient Mariner was an old man suffering from the guilt of killing an albatross during his voyage. He wishes to get rid of his guilt by retelling the incident to the wedding guests. When the guests don't pay any heed to his requests, he mesmerizes them with his "glittering eyes". He is anxious to share his story with others leaving aside their will to listen to him...(To be continued)

3. The speaker of the lines is "God save thee....so?" is the wedding guests, whereas, the lines "With my ... Albatross" have been spoken by the Ancient Mariner.

1. the mariner thought the bird was a christian soul coz as soon as the bird started going round and round the ship... the ice around it broke giving way for the ship to pass by....... thus every mariner thought that this bird was sent by God to help them reach their destination and save them frm their misery( getting stranded in the Atlantic).

3. yup... arty is right ... its the wedding guest who's speaking those lines....

hope it helps

thankz

I think Pooja your 1st answer is wrong because the sailors called it christian soul before the ice broke.

The actual answer to this question is the when the bird appeared they thought that it has been sent by Jesus for their help. They held it as a messenger or farishta of God and was called a christian soul

Thanks

well nitin as soon as the bird came towards them, it started flying around the ship and then the ice broke paving way for the ship to go... thus the mariners heralded it in the name of God......
