Q. The marble statue often slowly gets corroded when kept in open for a long time. Give the reaction also.

 well i m searching the same Q

i think this is coz of acid rain only

Well i support Prateek's answer becuase CARBONIC ACID might be the only reason for MARBLE TO GET CORRODED SLOWLY cuz MARBLE is a NON-METAL :) but in google it says that MARBLE IS A METAMOROPHIC ROCk, so it will contain  some METTALIC substances too, But in my case i would WRITE THAT THE REASON IS ACID RAIN :D

i think because of marbles are very soft

because SO2,NO2 gases are realeased into the atmosphere from various sources . These dissolve in rain water to give acid which corrodes marble status .

Because marble is pourour and easily absorbs water n get corroded

Taj mahal is an example of corrosion of marble. The discoloration of its marble is due to corrosion.

The gaseous oxides (CO2, NO2 and SO2) present in the air as chemical pollutants mix with water in air to form acids such as carbonic acid, nitric acid and sulphuric acid. This acid comes down as acid rain and cause corrosion of marble statues. Calcium carbonate present in marble is transformed into other compounds by reaction with acids as follows:

CO2 + H2O + CaCO3 → Ca(HCO3)2

CaCO3 + H2SO4 → CaSO4 + CO2 + H2O

The compounds formed are water soluble and are easily washed away.

Blackening of marble surfaces is due to the presence of carbonate, sulphate and nitrate salts.
