Dear Student,

For your second question:

Biodiversity should be conserved because it boosts ecosystem productivity where each species, no matter how small, all have an important role to play.

The southern slopes of the Himalayas are covered with vegetation in comparison to the northern slopes due to the following facts:

  • They receive more sunshine. The maximum ascent of the sun towards the north of equator is up to the Tropic of Cancer which lies below the southern slopes of Himalayas. As such, they receive more light.
  • The southern slopes receive more rainfall as they face the rain bearing monsoon winds. The northern slopes, on the other hand receive scanty rainfall as they are in the rain shadow area and thus have less vegetation.
