Due to paucity of time we will be able to answer two of your questions.

3) The rich were Amateurs for two reasons :

  •  They considered sport a kind of leisure & play for pleasure of playing & not for money.
  • There was not enough money in the game for the rich to be interested

5) Cricket was an English game. It was invented in England and became intimately linked to the culture of nineteenth century Victorian society. It represented the English values– fair play, discipline, gentlemanliness, all that Englishness. With the British, cricket spread to the colonies. In India, British ruled for 200 years. They spread their culture, sports being a part of it. The Indians not only played cricket but outplayed the British. The game of cricket thus got linked up closely with the politics of colonialism and nationalism.

The game of cricket did not spread in South America as widely as it did in India because it was not under the British rule for as compared to India. Instead the game of football is more famous there.
