Q1.HOW TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN ETHANOL AND PROPANOL?

Q2.GIVE THE REACTIONS TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN:-

i>C6H50H AND C6H5COOH

ii>C6H5CH2CHO AND CH3COCH3

PLZ  REPLY  FAST .......

Dear Student,

Ethanol and 1-propanol can be distinguished with the help of iodoform test. As ethanol gives yellow precipitates of iodoform by reacting with iodine in presence of base. But 1-Propanol does not undergo this reaction.

 Ethanol and 2-propanol cannot be distinguished with the help of iodoform test. Because both give iodoform reaction. So distinction between both can be done with the help of Lucas test. When ethanol is treated with Lucas reagent (equimolar mixture of conc. HCl and anhydrous ZnCl2), no turbidity is formed.

But turbidity appears in about five minutes, when 2-propanol is treated with Lucas reagent.

 Distinction between ethanol and propanol:

ethanol+NaOH+iodine gives yellow precipitate of iodofom wheras propapanol does not give the yellow precipitate.

distinction between

i) phenol and benzoic acid:

benzoic acid + NaHCO3   gives sodium benzoate + carbon dioxide + water {ie, evolution of carbon dioxide}

phenol + NaHCO3  does not produce carbon dioxide

ii)CH3COCH3  + iodine + NaOH gives yellow precipitate of iodoform wheras other one does not produce yellow ppt of iodoform

phenol and benzoic acid can be distinguished by ferric chloride test. phenol reacts with neutral ferric chloride (FeCl3) to give a violet coloured complex while benzoic acid does not give this test.

C6H5CH2CHO is an aldehyde and thus reduces tollen's reagent and fehling solution while acetone does not because it is a ketone.

PHENYL ETHANAL, C6H5CH2CHO AND DIMETHYL KETONE CH3COCH3 CAN BE DISTINGUISHED BY TOLLENS TEST AS KETONE CANNOT GIVE THIS TEST AND ALDEHYDE GIVES SILVER MIRROR WITH THIS TEST.
