Some of the main causes for the decline of the Mughal Empire were:

1. Aurangzeb was an ineffective ruler and his policies were largely against the goodwill of the people, who eventually began to dislike him.2. Aurangzeb's already weak rule was further weakened by his successors who were incapable of and incompetent to rule the vast empire.3. Foreign invasions by other monarchs especially by the British, played an important role in putting an end to the Mughal empire.4. Organisation of the Sikhs by Guru Gobind Singh into a military force to fight the Mughals.
