Review of chapter 11 and 12 of Hound of Baskervilles.

In the climax of the novel, Stapleton took off after Holmes killed the hound but he never reached that island of refuge towards which he had struggled through the fog in the night. It was conjectured that somewhere in the heart of Grimpen Mire, deep down in the foul slime of the huge morass, he had been sucked in and would forever be buried. Many traces of him were found on the bog-girt island where he used to hide his hound. It was established that Stapleton was the chief culprit behind the death of Sir Charles and had it not been for the timely intervention of Sherlock Holmes, he would have succeeded in killing Sir Henry too. Stapleton was the owner of the hound and the mastermind who had planned it all to lay his hands on the ancestral property. His connections with the family, that of being another nephew of Sir Charles were also deduced by Holmes.

In chapter 12, after the escaped convict Selden is found dead upon the moors, brutally attacked by the hound, Stapleton appeared on the scene and seemed to be aghast at the news that it was Selden who had been killed. By supreme effort he had overcome his amazement and disappointment to ask Holmes about the affair who had been present on the scene along with Watson. They could discern quite clearly that Stapleton had hoped for something else to happen and when he asked about Sir henry, their conjectures turned out to be true. Watson still persisted on asking why he was enquiring about Sir Henry particularly upon which he commented that Sir Henry had been expected in these parts. So Stapleton must have laid out his plans quite carefully in advance, luring Sir Henry to these desolate moors and the let loose the hound. Stapleton also asked them if they had heard an unnatural cry or seen something phantasmagoric but Holmes and Watson were already on to him so they did not satiate his curiosity. So it became evident from his demeanour that Stapleton was the owner of the hound and he was the one who lay the traps.
