The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is based on the Christian concept of sin, repentance, punishment and redemption. It revolves around the fickle-minded thoughts of human beings. The ancient mariner took the extreme initiative to kill the albatross because the other sailors on board apparently considered the latter to be the reason for bad weather conditions. It was an instinctive act without any sense of judgment. However, after things went wrong his fellow mariners started abusing him. They hung the dead albatross around his neck, metaphorically symbolising the burden of sin and the need for redemption. This punishment symbolises the Christian concepts of repentance to be redeemed of a sin.
