State one drawback of Rutherford's model.

Drawbacks of Rutherford's Model:

  • Rutherford compared atom as spolar system in which sun is static and other planets are revolving round, and in atom nuclei is static and electrons are revolving round. But, the solar system is huge while the atom is a microscopic particles, and so the Newtonian law of motion could not be applied on these and also electrons and nucleus are charged particles so the comparison is not correct and the explanation based on that may not be feasible.
  • It says that, electrons revolve round the nucleus, but according to Maxwell's electromagnetic theory, if a charged particle will revolve round continuously around nucleus, it will loose its energy and will fall down in nucleus and the nucleus will colapse, whereas we know that nucleus is static.
  • It could not explain the stability of atom and line spectra of the elements.
