The general characteristics of organic compounds are as follows:

• Their main constituents are Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen and some times elements such as Phosphorus, Nitrogen, and sulphur are present.
• They are essentially covalent compounds.
• They undergo addition, substitutin or elimination reactions.
• Generally, the characteristics of the organic compounds are dependent upon the functional groups present in them.
