दोनों एक छात्रावास में अध्ययन के लिए घर से दूर रहते हैं। कामता, बड़े भाई, अपना पूरा समय पढ़ने में खर्च करते हैं। इस पुस्तक में लिखे गए हर शब्द को समझने के लिए उनका जुनून ऐसा है कि कभी-कभी वह एक वर्ग में कुछ समय बिताने के लिए बस लिखने का अर्थ समझ लेता है। समता, छोटा भाई, कामता के विपरीत है। वह अध्ययन की तुलना में दोस्तों के साथ खेलने में अधिक दिलचस्पी है। लेकिन वह अपने बड़े भाई से डर गए हैं और खुश करने के लिए उसे उस मिनट का अध्ययन करना शुरू होता है जिसे वह देखता है। दोनों भाई यह साबित करने की कोशिश करते हैं कि उनके जीवन का तरीका सही है जो खेल के माध्यम से हास्यिक परिस्थितियों की ओर जाता है। बहुत ही कम एक ऐसे खेल में आते हैं जहां अंग्रेजी, इतिहास, भूगोल और विज्ञान जैसे विषयों को ऐसे तरीके से इलाज किया जाता है जिससे आपको हंसी होती है। चीजें जैसे 'पानीपत की लड़ाई लड़ेगी'? हमें पूरे विश्व का अध्ययन करने की आवश्यकता क्यों है? और कैसे अंग्रेजी एक बहुत ही कठिन भाषा है, जो थियेटर से प्यार करते हैं उन लोगों के लिए खेल का आयोजन करता है। जबकि इस चेहरे पर, यह नाटक दिनांकित हो सकता है लेकिन करीब से जांच करने पर कि अपील क्या प्यार है जो भाई जीवन के प्रति उनके अलग-अलग दृष्टिकोण के बावजूद प्यार करते हैं।

Bade Bhai Saheb is one such play that tells a story of the relationship between two brothers -- Kamta Prasad (age 17) and Samta Prasad (age 12). Both live away from home in a hostel to study. Kamta, the elder brother, spends all his time reading. Such is his passion to understand each and every word written in the book that sometimes he stays in one class a couple of times just to grasp the meaning of what is written. Samta, the younger brother, is just the opposite of Kamta. He is more interested in playing with friends than in studying. But he is terrified of his elder brother and to please him starts studying the minute he sees him.

Both the brothers try to prove that his way of living is correct that leads to comic situations all through the play. Very rarely does one come across a play where subjects like English, History, Geography and Science have been treated in a manner that makes you laugh. Things like ‘Where was the Battle of Panipat fought’? Why do we need to study History of the entire world? And how English is a very tough language makes the play a treat for those who love theatre.

While on the face of it, the play might appear dated but on closer examination what appeals is the love that the brothers share despite their different outlook towards life. The story is simple and told even in simpler words makes Bade Bhai Saheb endearing. The role played by the two brothers is captivating.

Samta endears himself to the audience with his carefree attitude and his deep-rooted love for his elder brother. Kamta on his part manages to hold ground by his disciplined and restrained acting.

However, what enthralls you is the climax. The scene where Kamta tells Samta that though their parents might never have gone to school or read even a single book, it is their experience of life that makes them educated. And however much they (Kamta & Samta) might study they can never match their parents’ intelligence. It stirs you and makes you think.

Overall the two characters give vibrancy to the role that which they play with a mixture of compassion, anguish and tenderness. Don’t miss this one.

'बड़े भाई साहब' कहानी प्रेमचंद द्वारा रचित है। प्रेमचंद की कहानियाँ हमेशा शिक्षाप्रद रही हैं। उन्होंने अपनी कहानियों के माध्यम से किसी-न-किसी समस्या पर प्रहार किया है। बड़े भाई साहब समाज में समाप्त हो रहे, कर्तव्यों के अहसास को दुबारा जीवित करने का प्रयास मात्र है। इस कहानी में बड़े भाई साहब अपने कर्तव्यों को संभालते हुए, अपने भाई के प्रति अपनी ज़िम्मेदारियों को पूरा कर रहे हैं। उनकी उम्र इतनी नहीं है, जितनी उनकी ज़िम्मेदारियाँ है। लेकिन उनकी ज़िम्मेदारियाँ उनकी उम्र के आगे छोटी नज़र आती हैं। वह स्वयं के बचपन को छोटे भाई के लिए तिलाजंलि देते हुए भी नहीं हिचकिचाते हैं। उन्हें इस बात का अहसास है कि उनके गलत कदम छोटे भाई के भविष्य को बिगाड़ सकते हैं। वह अपने भविष्य के साथ खिलवाड़ करने से भी नहीं चूकते। एक चौदह साल के बच्चे द्वारा उठाया गया कदम छोटे भाई के उज्जवल भविष्य की नींव रखता है। यही आदर्श बड़े भाई को छोटे भाई के सामने और भी ऊँचा बना देते हैं। यह कहानी सीख देती है कि मनुष्य उम्र से नहीं अपने किए गए कामों और कर्तव्यों से बड़ा होता है। वर्तमान युग में मनुष्य विकास तो कर रहा है परन्तु आदर्शों को भुलता जा रहा है। भौतिक सुख एकत्र करने की होड़ में हम अपने आदर्शों को छोड़ चुके हैं। हमारे लिए आज भौतिक सुख ही सब कुछ है। अपने से छोटे और बड़ों के प्रति हमारी ज़िम्मेदारियाँ हमारे लिए आवश्यक नहीं है। प्रेमचंद ने इन्हीं कर्तव्यों के महत्व को सबके सम्मुख रखा है।
