the indian national movement was transformed by gandhi why

Mahatma Gandhi certainly transformed the Indian National Movement. It is not that the attempts to free India were not made before Gandhi stepped in but those attempts lacked unity. Gandhiji made use of every situation to unify people from all the communities, castes etc. This unity was the actual strength which threw the British away. Everybody interpretted swaraj in their own terms, every community had their own reasons for participating but the name of Gandhi was present everywhere.
