For a n-sided figure and if n is odd, then there is a line of symmetry from each vertex perpendicular to the opposite side.

So, we have n vertices, hence n lines of symmetry.

For a n-sided figure and if n is even, then there are two types of lines of symmetry. There are $\frac{n}{2}$ lines of symmetry connecting opposite vertices and another $\frac{n}{2}$ lines of symmetry that are perpendicular bisectors of opposite sides. So, in total, we have n lines of symmetry.
