The smell of hot food reaches us from several meters but not of cold food. Why?

Dear Student,

Good to see that you know the answer. Actually, the molecules expand and spread far apart when heated. This can be referred to as diffusion of gases in air due to the constant random motions of the particles of gases.

Hope, this answers your question.

Best wishes!

BECAUSE THE FOOD HAS BEEN HEATED WHICH GIVES A PARTICULAR SMELL OF THE FOOD AND THAT IS CARRIED AWAY WITH THE AIR PARTICLES AND EXPANDS WHEN REACHES US.

GOOD MORNING JYOTHI ,

We know that inter molecular spaces of gases are largest and gases have weakest attarction force. When we boil food, the particles of gases reaches us rapidly due to diffusion. And the other reason - we know that the particles of matter are continuously moving - it is one of the characteristics of matter. So, when we heat or boil the food, we gert it's smell.

Best wishes to you,
