they were childish enough and many ways quite artless. Jacopo was lively as a squirrel, Nicola's smile was steady and engaging. Yet in these boyish faces there was a seriousness which were far beyond their years.

1)Both the boys were childlike, innocent and native.
2)Nicola and Jacopo are the two 'gentlemen' of Verona. Nicola, aged 13, is the elder brother of jacopo aged 12. Both of them are extremely sincere, devoted and self-sacrificing. They are ready to do anything to save their sister Lucia  who is afficted with tuberculosis. They both were shabby Nicola was more matured one.
