Government's Categorization of Forests are:

(i) Reserved Forests: More than half of the total forest land has been declared reserved forests. Reserved forests are regarded as the most valuable , also known as permanent forest they are mainly spread Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, uttrakhand etc.

(ii) Protected Forests: Almost one-third of the total forest area is protected forest and are protected from any further depletion. Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, Odisha, HP have areas under protected forests.

(iii) Unclassed Forests: These are other forests and wastelands belonging to both government, private individuals and communities .North East states and parts of Gujarat have these forests under them.

Forests classified on the basis of rainfall found in India are:

a. Evergreen Forests: Found mostly in the Western Ghats and the north-eastern states of India. 

b. Deciduous Forests: Found mostly in the Deccan Plateau and the foothills of the Himalayas.

c. Coniferous Forests: Found in Himalayas.
