untouchability is a crime against humanity. then why do we commit such crimes? how can we wipe it out from the face of our society

Untouchability has its roots from the traditional caste system followed by the Hinduism since age old times. It is a crime according to the Indian Constitution and is punishable by law.But since it is an integral part of the Hindu caste system and is deep rooted into the Indian society, it is still practised in many parts especially in rural areas of India.

Despite different laws in the country, untouchability persists in different forms. In schools, the dalit boys and girls are still forced to sit at the end. The discrimination in the mid-day Meal is a known fact. One of the major sources of untouchability in India is the issue of manual scavenging.

We can wipe out this evil if we take certain initiatives:

1. It is essential to strengthen and renew people’s initiatives against untouchability and caste system. It will help the local people understand their rights and fight it vigorously.

2. Education is the best method for the eradication of untouchability Therefore; effort should be made for the spread of education among the untouchables. Moreover, arrangements should be made by the Government for the spread of general as well as technical education among Harijan students. Special inducements in the form of scholarships, free hostel accommodation, books, stationery etc. should be provided to them.

3. Upliftment of the economic conditions of the backward classes is essential. They should be given vocational training in various crafts and technical skills and financially should be assisted to start small scale and cottage industries of their own.

4. For the improvement of the standard of living of Harijans and other backward classes, Government should provide as much employment facilities as possible.

5. Caste system is the root cause of the origin of untouchability. Therefore, the abolition of caste system is very essential for the eradication of untouchability.

6. For the removal of untouchability, inter-caste marriages, especially between the higher castes and the untouchable castes should be encouraged by all possible means.
