What is hyperopia? Commonly referred to as farsightedness, this condition allows objects in the distance to be viewed clearly, while objects close-up are blurry. Common tell-tale signs include squinting, eyestrain, and near objects appearing blurry. Sometimes, headaches may occur when focusing on near objects (during activities such as reading or sewing) for an extended period of time. The condition of hyperopia is usually present at birth and tends to run in families through genetics.
What is presbyopia? Presbyopia, on the other hand, is a natural part of aging. This occurs when the lenses in the eye thicken and lose their elasticity, and the muscles surrounding the lens weaken. This condition causes the decline of vision and the decreasing of focus, especially on near objects. Common symptoms include blurred vision (which often worsens in dim light or when you are tired), eyestrain, and headaches. Presbyopia usually emerges around age 40 and progresses through age 60.
