What are ambident nucleophiles? Explain with an example !

Ambident Nucleophiles are the ios which possess two nucleophilic centers.  They bond with other ions with both the centers resulting in speices of different configuration.

Example: cyanide ion: CN- and nitrile ion NO3-

Cyanide has two nucleophilic centers one on Carbon and other on Nitrogen.

Nitrile has one on Nitrogen and other on Oxygen!!

ambident nucleophi;es are thos nucleophiles which cn donate  or make bonds from  both ends for example CN- I.E CYANIDE

CN-  can form bond fron both endsi.e from N also AND from C also.

ambident nucleophile is a species capable of donating electrons to electron deficient species ...by two or more than two atoms on an anion , compound or any substance to do so

e.g  RCN(cyanides)  n RNC (isocyanides)  in both N & C act as donors and thus conformes that both are ambident nucleophiles

Ambident nucleophiles are nucleophiles which can attack through two different sites.

ex: Cyanide group can attack through C or N because of resonanace structure to give alky cyanide or iso cyanide.

  • 7
Those nucleophiles that can attack throughtwo sites are called ambient nucleophiles. Eg CN as it can attack through C and N both.

Nucleophiles which have two attacking sites.
For ex- CN
