Latitude and longitude form an (imaginary) grid of lines on the Earth's surface, and enable the identification of any point by its geographic coordinates.

Latitude lines are circles around the globe connecting points that are the same distance from the equator (which is a latitude line itself, 0°)
Longitude lines connect the North Pole to the South Pole, and represent distance from an arbitrary line called the Prime Meridian. They are used to determine a location's position measured around the globe east or west.

Latitude lines (called parallels, because they are parallel on globes) are formed from points on a circle around the globe, equidistant from the midline (the equator) and expressed as angles from the equator (i.e. a line from the Earth's center to a corresponding point on the equator). Latitude lines are parallel to the equator, and each 1° difference is the same distance (about 111 km or 69 miles).
Longitude lines (meridians) represent the division of the (nominally) spherical Earth into its component 360 degrees of arc. Longitude lines intersect at each pole, and the distance between lines is greatest at the equator (where it is approximately equal to a degree of latitude). They are numbered as degrees east or west of an arbitrary meridian, which is set at Greenwich, England, and longitudes can number up to 180° E or W (where they are the same, at approximately the International Date Line).

  • a globe has a number of circular lines forming grids . these grids give the exact position of a place on the globe . these are called latitudes and longitudes. to make the study of the eNorth Pole is arth easier Ptolemy of Alexandria invented the system  of latitudes and longitudes
  • latitudes :the latitudes are imaginary lines  running  mid-way between the North Pole and the South Pole . it is marked  as 0 degree. the North Pole  is 90 degree North  and south pole is 90degree  south . we have four latitudes

LATITUDES

We can imagine the Earth as a sphere, with an axis around which it spins. The ends of the axis are the North and South Poles. The Equator is a line around the earth, an equal distance from both poles. The Equator is also the latitude line given the value of 0 degrees. This means it is the starting point for measuring latitude. Latitude values indicate the angular distance between the Equator and points north or south of it on the surface of the Earth.

A line connecting all the points with the same latitude value is called a line of latitude. This term is usually used to refer to the lines that represent values in whole degrees. All lines of latitude are parallel to the Equator, and they are sometimes also referred to as parallels. Parallels are equally spaced. There are 90 degrees of latitude going north from the Equator, and the North Pole is at 90 degrees N. There are 90 degrees to the south of the Equator, and the South Pole is at 90 degrees S. When the directional designators are omitted, northern latitudes are given positive values and southern latitudes are given negative values.

LONGITUDES

Lines of longitude, called meridians, run perpendicular to lines of latitude, and all pass through both poles. Each longitude line is part of a great circle. There is no obvious 0-degree point for longitude, as there is for latitude. Throughout history many different starting points have been used to measure longitude. By international agreement, the meridian line through Greenwich, England, is currently given the value of 0 degrees of longitude; this meridian is referred to as the Prime Meridian. Longitude values are indicate the angular distance between the Prime Meridian and points east or west of it on the surface of the Earth.

The Earth is divided equally into 360 degrees of longitude. There are 180 degrees of longitude to the east of the Prime Meridian; when the directional designator is omitted these longitudes are given positive values. There are also 180 degrees of longitude to the west of the Prime Meridian; when the directional designator is omitted these longitudes are given negative values. The 180-degree longitude line is opposite the Prime Meridian on the globe, and is the same going either east or west.

Parallels or latitudes
We can draw a set of circles between the North Pole and the South Pole. These circles should be parallel to the equator. These circles are called parallel or lines of latitudes. The distance of a place north or south of the equator is measured as an angle. This angle is the latitude of that place. The latitude of a place is the distance of that place north or south of the equator, measured as an angle, whose vertex is at the centre of the earth. The latitude of a place is always expressed in degrees. There are 360degrees in a circle, 60minutes in a degree and 60 second in a minute. The equator is taken as the starting line and thus, marked as 0° latitude. The distance between the equator and the north pole is ¼  of a circle.
