What are the chemical formula of diamond and graphite? Just C or C4?

As said by your friends, the chemical formula of diamond and graphite will be simply C and not C4. This is because both the substances involve extensive bonding between its constituent carbon atoms. Thus there are not mere 60 atoms of carbon, rather both diamond and graphite can be regarded as macromolecules of carbon.

@ Divya and Komal, very good attempt. Keep it up :)

its just C

Why? Chemical formula of buckminsterfullerene is C60. Don't 5 atoms of carbon combine to form 1 molecule of diamond and 4 to form 1 molecule of graphite? Please answer only if you are sure and give reasons and examples whenever possible, so as not to confuse me.

graphite and diamond are also denoted by "c" because they are also made up of carbon
