- what are the chemical properties of hydrogen?
- what are the uses of hydrogen?
Hydrogen shows some chemical properties which are as follow:
- - Reaction with Halogen: Hydrogen forms halogen acid when heated with halogens.
H2 + X2 → 2HX
- - Reaction with Nitrogen: It forms ammonia with heated with nitrogen in the ration of 1:3 volume at appropriate temperature and pressure in the presence of Iron catalyst.
N2 + 3H2 → 2NH3
3- Reaction with metals: It forms metal hydride.
Na + H2 → 2NaH
4- Reaction with oxygen: When heated with oxygen directly, water is formed with the liberation of huge amount of energy.
2H2 + O2 → 2H2O
5- As a reducing agent: When heated with Metal Salt it reduces it to metallic form.
Fe2O3 + 3H2 → 2Fe + 3H2O
6- Reaction with unsaturated hydrocarbons: It reacts with unsaturated hydrocarbon and convert it into saturate hydrocarbon.
CH2=CH2 + H2 → CH3CH3
USES:
- - It is used as fuel in rocket and solvent in gas chromatography
- - It is used to prepared vanaspati ghee from vanaspati oil.
- - It is used in the prepared of important halogen acid like HCl.
- - It is used as reducing agent in metallurgy.
- - It is used in the preparation of methanol.
