what are the main causes of water pollution?

Main causes of water pollution-

1-Sewage- This contains waste water from our household and other domestic waste dumped into water bodies.

2- Industrial waste- This includes wastes discharged from factories, refineries into the water bodies. These wastes contains harmful chemicals such as alkalis, acids etc. and toxic metals like mercury, arsenic etc. Which kills the aquatic life.

3- Oil spills- Oils released from oil drums which are accidentally discharged from ships into the water bodies.

4- Agricultural run off- This is the waste water released from agricultural field which contains pesticides and fertilizers that affects the aquatic life.

The causes of water pollution include sewage and wastewater from industrial and agricultural waste and domestic households waste. Marine dumping is also another cause because some items take too long to degrade and others take years. Water pollution can also be caused by oil spills and oceans are polluted by oil day by day from oil spills, regular shipping, run-offs and dumping.

The main sources of water pollution are as follows:

Sewage: The dirty water from latrine, bathrooms, and all the household wastes are dumped into water reservoirs, as a result the water pollution increases.

The Industrial pollutants: The industrial pollutants are passed into water reservoirs and such pollutants of industries are sugar, paper, tannery, clothes, jute, steel, fertilizer and water gets, polluted. The water of the reservoir become unfit for use and as the industrial pollutants contain toxic chemicals creates health hazards.

Mercury passes into food chains poisons fish and creates diseases.

Acid, alkali, poisons and other liquid pollutants. It kills fishes and other aquatic animals and become toxic to human beings.

Thermal pollution and hot water causes high temperature and reduces oxygen in water.

Agricultural pollutants: fertilizers and pesticides are largely used to increase the production and controlling pests. Such materials mix in water and pollute the air and creates poisonous.

The causes of water pollution are too numerous to identify in one article. However, the main sources can be categorized in three categories: agricultural, industrial, and municipal.

  1. The following is a brief list of some of the most significant contributors from each category.

1.Fertilizers

Nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates are used in fertilizers to increase the nutrition of the soil, but when this water runs off into the water it creates problems.

2.Pesticides

Pesticides run off farmers fields and roadsides into the drainage, mingling with the water.

3.Industrial and Chemical Waste

4.Mining

Dangerous chemicals used in mining processes are carried into rivers and lakes and have devastating effects on the water.

Heavy metals and sulfur compounds that are trapped deep within mountains are disrupted through the mining and end up on the surface as waste or drain-off, eventually making their way into the water.

Cyanide that is used to chemically extract gold from ore finds its way into the groundwater and also rivers through eventual run-off.

The most hazardous offense of mining, however, is when companies dump their mining waste directly into the water as a means of disposal. Definitely one of the most irresponsible causes of water pollution.
