  • Silk Route is the name given to the ancient trade route which linked China, Central Asia and  Mediterranean via land.
  • It is 4,000 miles long
  • Its route begins from Sian in China, bypassing Takla Makan desert in Central Asia, crosses the  Pamir Knot, Afghanistan and reaches Levant.
  • It was named as silk route because silk was the main item of trade.

Silk route in ancient time was the route thru which silk trade happened . since the chinese were the first to discover the process of silk making, they kept it a secret for nearly 4 centuries. china began to trade silk with other countries  thru this route so this route is known as silk route. Merchants travelled from this route to other countries to trade silk.
