Criminal justice is the system of institutions of governments aimed at maintaining social control, fighting crime, or inflicting punishment on those who violate laws. Those not guilty can also seek for protection from the system.

The term 'criminal justice system' is used to describe all the different agencies and organisations that are involved in law, order, crime and punishment in England and Wales and how they work together.
