What does the line "On the day of Sicilian July, with Etna smoking" mean?

On a hot  day in July in Sicily (a place in Italy ), Etna ( the name of a volcano in Sicily [ Italy ] ) was smoking . Beacuse of that the bowels of the earth was  hot.
