cardbord refers to the photograph..because it is just a piece of paper now... nothing else her mother doesnt exist it is just a memory!

"Both" here refers to the poet's mother's recollection of her childhood days at the sea holiday and the poet remembering her mothert's laughing face.both these situations belongs to the past because her mother is no more alive.
