what is acid rain and its causes and effect

when sulphardioxide and nitrogendioxide gas reacts with watervapour present in atmosphere to form sulpharic acid and nitric acid this acid drop down with rain making the rain acidic this is called acid rain.......

WHEN AIR POLLUTANTS SUCH AS OXIDES OF SULPHUR AND NITROGEN REACT WITH OXYGEN AND WATER VAPOUR OF THE ATMOSPHERE , THEY EVENTUALLU FORM DILUTE SOLUTIONS OF SULPHURIC ACID AND NITRIC ACID , RESPECTIVELY . THESE ACIDS MIX WITH RAIN WATER AND COME DOWN IN THE FORM OF ACID RAIN . ACID - FORMING GASES AND ACID RAIN HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO RESULT IN

1 ) DESTRUCTION OF VEGETATION DUE TO ACIDIFICATION OF SOIL

2 ) ACCELERATED LEACHING OF ROCKS AND SOILS

3 ) DECAY OF LIMESTONE , MARBLE , AND OTHER BUILDING MATERIALS ( E.G. TAJ MAHAL WHICH WAS MADE OF WHITE MARBLE IS NOW HAVING BLACH DIRT )

4 ) DAMAGE TO HUMAN RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Acid rain is rainfall that has been acidified. Rain is acidified by oxides of sulphur and nitrogen. Acid rain usually has a pH of less than 5.6. It is formed when pollutants called oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, present in factory smoke, and car exhaust, react with the moisture in the atmosphere. On acid rain, the soil become infertile, water become acidic this cannot be used for drinking and other works, the building and monument get highly damaged. The environment becomes harmful due to presence of toxic gases for breathing. The life on planet becomes difficult to survive.

Acid rain is a rain or any other form of precipitation that is unusually acidic, meaning that it possesses elevated levels of hydrogen ions (low pH). It can have harmful effects on plants, aquatic animals, and infrastructure. Acid rain is caused by emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, which react with the water molecules in the atmosphere to produce acids. Governments have made efforts since the 1970s to reduce the release of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere with positive results. Nitrogen oxides can also be produced naturally by lightning strikes and sulfur dioxide is produced by volcanic eruptions. The chemicals in acid rain can cause paint to peel, corrosion of steel structures such as bridges, and erosion of stone statues.

When fossil fuels such as coal, gasoline, and fuel oils are burned, they emitoxides of sulfur, carbon, and nitrogen into the air . These oxides combine with moisture in the air to form sulfuric acid, carbonic acid, and nitric acid. This is known as acid rain. The term acid rain is also applied to other forms of precipitation—snow, hail, sleet, and fog—that are similarly acidic.
