what is ambident nucleophiles ?

Dear Student,

A nucleophile which can attack from two or more places resulting in the formation of two or more products is known as an ambident nucleophile.

For example: nitro group (-NO2) is an ambident nucleophile. When it is bonded to K, it reacts with alkyl halides to give the corresponding alkyl nitrile.

On the other hand, when the same nitro group is bonded to silver, it reacts with alkyl halide to give the corresponding nitroalkane.
