What is an alkanone?

Alkanone is a class of organic compounds containing the carbonyl group, whose carbon atom is joined to two other carbon atoms, i.e., with the carbonyl group occurring within the carbon chain.

For example CH3COCH3 is propanone. In this compound, three carbon atoms are present, so word root is 'prop'. In this compound all carbon-carbon bonds are single bond, so sufix 'ane' is used. Now carbonyl group present here, is further linked to two carbon atoms, so name of compound will be propanone.
