what is atmospheric pressure?

We know the envelope of different gases surrounding the earth is known as the atmosphere. It extends up to a few thousand kilometres. The pressure exerted by the weight of these gases in the atmosphere is known as atmospheric pressure. It is the force exerted on a unit area of surface by the weight of air above that surface.

Atmospheric pressure is the force per unit area exerted into a surface by the weight of air above that surface in the atmosphere of Earth (or that of another planet).

the pressure exerted by atmosphere air is termed as atmospheric pressure. this is the weight of air column over a unit area (1cm sq. ). for eg, the area of head of a boy is 10cm*10cm. then weight of air column of the height of the atmosphere and area 10cm*10cm is as large as 1000kg. this heavy weight does not crush us because the pressure inside our bodies is also equal to the atmospheris pressure as it cancels the pressure outside.
