what is degree of freedom?

Degree of freedom (f) means number of independent co-ordinates required to specify a system.

In three dimensions N number of particles of a system has 3N degrees of freedom. Now if k be the number of constraints then degree of freedom gets reduced given by

   f = 3N-k

Degree of freedom is like a function which can vary without any effect of other variable,i.e., degree of freedom of a gas is the number of factors that are independent of each other.

We use degree of freedom to find the total energy per mole or per molecule as :-

Each degree of freedom has KE=1/2 RT.

So KE per molecule(or KEavg) = n X 1/2 RT where n is no. of degrees of freedom.

KE per atom = n X 1/2PV

Hope it helps..!!

Degree of freedom (D) is the number of independent co-ordinates necessary to specify the motion of a system.

D = 3N- k

N = no. of particles, k = no. of constrains
