Indira Point is the name given for the southernmost tip of Republic of India. It has situated on Great Nicobar Island in the Nicobar Islands eastern Indian Ocean at 6°45’10″N and 93°49’36″E which it is not on the mainland of India. It is located in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands whom has named on the point in honour of Indira Gandhi. It was formerly known by various names that including Pygmalion Point, Parsons Point, and for a brief period of time India Point.
It is located 540 km and more than a day’s voyage by sea from Port Blair which has the capital city and main port of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It has separated on the sea about 160 km from Sumatra island of Indonesia.
Kanyakumari has an southernmost tip of the mainland in the Indian subcontinent itself at 8°4′41″N and 77°32′28″E. It is slightly north of Indira Point.
