The early farmers used to practise shifting agriculture. Land at that time was available freely. They would clear a plot of land in a forest and burn the vegetation to make it fit for agriculture. It also came to be known as ''slash and burn'' method. In india it is known as Jhumming.

jhum cultivation or shifting cultivation is the process of growing crops by first clearing a piece of land, burning the same and growing crops on it. this burnt soil contains potash which increases the nutrient content of the soil. this process is generally followed by tribal groups of india.
