what is lokpal bill?
Dear Student,
Here is the answer to your question.
Lokpal Bill is a pending legislation in the Parliament of India for the provision and creation of the office of a Lokpal or an ombudsman who would have the power to investigate cases of corruption at the highest levels of functioning of the government. It was first introduced in 1968. However, the bill has not been passed till date. Civil society has responded by proposing the Jan Lokpal Bill that seeks to give wider range of powers to the office of Lokpal including putting the Prime Minister and higher judiciary within the ambit of its investigation. These proposals have escalated into a mass movement that demands the earliest passage of the bill by the Parliament of India. The political class initially responded by saying that this went against the tenets of parliamentary democracy. However, sustained public pressure has seen the government yield to the demands of protestors and agreeing to the examination of all versions of the bill by the standing committee of the Parliament.
Hope this resolves your query.
