What is meant by solvation?

Solvation, also sometimes called dissolution, is the process of attraction and association of molecules of a solvent with molecules or ions of a solute when a substance is dissolved in a solvent. In simple terms, it can be defined as dissolving a solute in a solvent. For example, when an ionic compound is dissolved in water, the ions dissolve, spread out and become surrounded by solvent molecules.
