what is micropyle? what are its functions?

  • A pore remaining in the seed coat due to the incomplete closure of the integument and exist as passageway, which leads to nucleus and is referred as micropyle.
  • The outermost covering of a seed is the seed coat. The seed coat has two layers, the outer testa and the inner tegmen. The hilum is a scar on the seed coat through which the developing seeds were attached to the fruit. Above the hilum is a small pore called micropyle.

Function of Micropyle

  • Micropyle in case of Pinus plants is known to play pivotal role in pollination where in pollen is transported via micropylar canal to reach the surface of nucellus.
  • The micropylar fluid is known to be secreted during pollination and helps in transportation of pollen to the nucellus.
