Nai dhobi bandhs: In Awadh, the peasants were against talukdars and landlords as they demanded exorbitantly high rents and a variety of other cesses. Led by Baba Ramchandra – a sanyasi who had earlier been to Fiji as an indentured labourer, these peasants started Nai dhobi bandhs in various places.  These bandhs were organized by Panchayats to deprive landlords of the services of even barbers and washermen.

Begar: Begar means to work without any form of compensation i.e, no wages, no food grains, no clothing or any kind of payment.  Most of the peasants in Awadh were working on the fields of the talukdars and landlords in the form of Begar.
The peasants were forced to live as tenants and as tenants; they had no security of tenure, being regularly evicted so that they could acquire no right over the leased land.

Baba Ramchandra raised voice against this and his idea was to start a peasant movement demanding:
 i. reduction of revenue
 ii. Abolition of begar
iii. Social boycott of oppressive landlords.
