what is relative lowering of vapour pressure???? i dont want the formula for this , i want the defination for this??? can anyone help me out.....

Dear student!

Relative lowering of vapor pressure is a reduction in the saturated vapour pressure of a pure liquid when a solute is introduced. If the solute is a solid of low vapour pressure, the decrease in vapour pressure of the liquid is proportional to the concentration of particles of solute; i.e. to the number of dissolved molecules or ions per unit volume.

It does not depend on the nature of the particles. If p0 is the vapour pressure of pure solvent and ps is the vapour pressure of the solution, the difference (p0 – ps) is termed lowering in vapour pressure and the ratio [p0–ps/p0] is termed relative lowering in vapour pressure.

when a non volatile solute is added to pure solvent ten there is decrease in vapoure pressure and this decrease in vapoure pressure is called as lowring in vapoure pressure.And the ratio of lowring in vapoure prssure and original vapoure is called as relative lowring in vapoure pressure

R.L.= Po-Ps /po

there po=vapoure pressure of pure solvent

ps=v.p. of solution
