Synthetic resins method is a method used for removing permanent hardness of water. In this method ion exchange resins (RSO₃H) is changed to RNa by treating it with NaCl. Then, RNa exchanges Na⁺ ions with Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions present in hard water and as a result, hard water is softened.
