what is the difference between notochord and vertebral column?

Notochord is the chief distinguishing feature of Chordates.  It is a flexible rod-like structure which lies between the dorsal nerve tube and the gut. It is mesodermal in origin. It increases locomotory power and provide internal support. It supports the body in case of the lower chordates while in higher chordates (Vertebrates) it is present only during embryonic stages and after that it is replaced by a vertebral column. vertebral column is a bony structure made up of vertebrae and protects the spinal cord.

The vertebrae are the bones in the vertebral column of backbone that protects the spinal chord and supports the body. The notochord on the other hand is a mesodermal structure of the foetus. It stimulates the induction and differentiation of many hings including the basal plate of the neural tube. The vertebrae are the bones in the vertabral column of backbone that protects the spinal chord and suppots the body.
