What is the difference between 'valence electrons' and 'valency' ?? Can I know how the valency increases from left to right in a periodic table??

Valence electrons are the number of electrons present in the outer most shell of an atom.

Valency is the combining capacity of one atom with another atom to form chemical bonds.

If you consider Oxygen, it has the atomic number 8, and thus has eight electrons. It has 6 electrons in the outer most shell and requires only 2 electrons to attain stable electronic configuration. It is easier for oxygen to gain 2 electrons rather than loosing 6 electrons. Hence its valency is 2.

The number of valence electrons of elements increases from left to right in the periodic table.

If the no of valence electrons less than or equal to 4; then valency is equal to no. of valence electrons.

If the no of valence electrons more than 4; then valency = 8 – no.of valence electrons.

Group in the periodic table: 1  2  13  14  15  16   17   18

             Valence electrons:  1   2   3    4    5    6    7     8

                           Valency:   1   2   3    4   3,5  2,6  1,7  0,8

This does not include transition metals as they not change the no. of valence electrons.

valency electron is the no of electrons in the outermost shell..... while valency is the combining capacity of an element.the valency of elements having  valency electron 1,2,3,4 are same and if valency electron is more than 4...that is 5,6,7,8 then valency is 8 minus no. of valency electron.

on going from left to right in a periodic table valency increases from 1 to 4  and then decreases to zero

thumbs up plzzz

valency- valency is the combining capacity of an element.

valency electrons is the number of electrons in the last shell of an atom.. in an electronic configuration say chlorine its atomic number is 17 and the configuration is K-2  L-8  M-7 so 7 is the valency electrons n to become stable it needs 1 electron so it will have to gain 1 electron then -1 is the valency of chlorine...

n then as raghu said on going from left to right in a periodic table valency increases from 1 to 4 n then decreases to zero...

gotta gimme a thumbs up..

valence electron means no. of electrons in the outermost shell of an atom

Valency means the no. of electrons it can give or take to attain a stable configuration...

valency electrons  meeans the number of electrons in the outer most shell.............

valency means combining capacity of the elements

hope this helps u

valency of an element is the number of electron that atom can lose or gain and valence electron  means the number of electron in outer most shell .example -; chlorine 2;8;7 so valence electron is 7 [ outer most shell electron]    and its valency is 1 because it has ability to gain 1 electron. this is the difference between valence electron and valency.
