What is the structural formula for KETONES?? for example the structural formula for alkanes is Cn H2n+2...same way can I know the formula for ketones?? and what functional group is it from??

  O

 ll

Is the condensed formula for propanon CH3 -C- CH3 ?? cuz I've read this formula in my science taxtbook, whereas on meritnation there's another formula..

1.

General formula for ketone is...

R-CO-R'

Where R and R' are the alkyl groups. R and R' may or may not be same.

General formula for alkyl group is -- CnH2n+1

Or we can also write  ketone as...

CnH2n+1  -CO-Cn'H2n'+1

where n and n' may or may not be equal.

2.

In ketone , the fictional group is carbonyl carbon.

 >C=O

i.e...

RR' >C=O

3.

Condensed formula for propanone is

C3H6O

 or (CH3)2C=O

or (CH3)2CO

or CH3-CO-CH3

these all are same.

CnH2nO.............ketone iz a functional group....itz right..wat z d other formula in meritnation?

STRUCTURAL formula for ketones is R-(C=0)R'

WHERE R IS RADICAL(ALKYL GROUP)

AND propanone is C3H6O .

HOPE IT HELPS.:)

Thanx guys!! @AKKVCRPF.. u have said R and R' are radicals of alkyl group, can u tell me what formula we can use for that radical?? cuz alkyls are formed when one Hydrogen atom is removed from an alkane..
