What is the trend of Poverty estimates in India?

 According to the Government of India, the definition of poverty is linked to the expenditure required by an average household to meet a specified minimum nutrition in terms of calories and urban poverty in particular is denoted by an intake of 2100 calories per capita per day. Rural poverty is denoted by an intake of 2400 calories per day. This is how number of poor are estimated.

a.   Accordingly, The dynamics of  Poverty alleviation are not the same for Rural and urban areas and both reflect a different scenarios all together.
b.  Poverty in India has declined from  55 % in 1973 ( with
56.4​% in rural areas and 49% in urban araes) to 36 % in 1993 ( with 37.3% in rural araes and 32.4% in urban areas). Poverty rate further came down to 26% in 2000.
c.. According to recent figures ( 2013 data ) released by Planning Commission, Poverty in urban areas has been estimated to be 13.7% and in rural areas it is 25.7%.
d.  In Urban areas Poverty has decreased at  a much higher rate as compared with rural areas due to better infrastructure and industrialization. People in rural areas lack access to financial resources.
d. If we compare certain issues related to poverty we may find that size of families in rural areas is more than those in urban areas due to lack of awareness, illiteracy.d. Poverty has reduced more in urban areas due to availability of better job opportunities, in this regard we have witnessed government introducing number of rural poverty alleviating schemes so to create more opportunities in rural areas. Like , Rural Employment Generation Programme (REGP), Prime Minister Rojgar Yojana (PMRY), National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).

 States like Bihar, Orissa  have been amongst the poorest states in India. They have more than 40% of population living below poverty line
f. Worst effected would include casual labourers in urban areas, landless farmers in rural areas with most of the them are living under abysmally low conditions, dying of hunger , of starvation . 

g. The most vulnerable group in rural areas the schedule caste in rural households  are the worst victims . Likewise, Poverty affects tribal people in forest areas even more, where loss of entitlement to resources has made them even poorer.
